Why Being Broke is Good?

I want to go back to being broke.

Let me rephrase, I want to bring back the “broke mentality.”

The mentality I had while in University.

“Living like a Student”.

In other words, when it is socially acceptable to be broke.

Now, I’m earning.

But, since there’s money in the bank, my spending has gone up on conveniences I don’t need.

The main two are transportation and food.

Transportation

When I was a student, I walked everywhere. Unless it was egregiously far, I couldn’t justify taking the TTC (public transit). I probably walked about 20,000 steps a day.

With an income, not only do I take the subway to work every day, but, I even Ubered to work this morning because I was running late.

As a student, I didn’t have the luxury of taking Uber. So, I simply get up and leave earlier.

Food

I rarely ate out in university.

I cooked all my meals.

I never had the desire to go eat out because I was diligent about going grocery shopping and keeping my pantries stocked.

With an income, I eat out more than I’d like to admit.

I’ve lost the motivation to cook. Since there’s money in the bank, why not save some time and get Chipotle?

This part of my brain that was so keen on saving money then is suddenly so busy that they can’t cook a basic meal. Sad right?

What to do

I know that this is probably a pretty common problem. The adage of “more money more problems” isn’t a saying for no reason.

So, how do I stick with the mentality that I’m broke? I think this mentality will help me …

  1. Be more motivated to make more money, potentially through side hustles.
  2. Rewire my brain to not be lazy and just do things that could otherwise be solved by money. Like cooking, for example.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know in the comments.
